How to Use AND/OR Logic and Nested Groups in Segments

Learn how to create complex audience rules using AND/OR logic with grouped conditions in the Segments module. This ensures your targeting matches exactly how you intend to combine filters.

Why Use Grouped Logic?

With grouped logic, you can combine multiple filters with AND and OR conditions, apply precedence, and even nest groups together. This allows precise targeting based on both profile data and event behavior.

Step 1: Add Conditions into Groups

When creating a segment, you can add one or two conditions into a group.

  • Each group supports AND/OR logic between its conditions.

  • After adding two conditions, the “+” icon disappears to keep the group size limited.

Step 2: Define Group Logic

  • Groups themselves can be connected with AND or OR.

  • Conditions inside a group are evaluated first, then combined with other groups.

  • This ensures logical precedence is respected.

Step 3: Save and Apply Segments

  • Saved segments preserve all groups, conditions, and logic structure.

  • User counts in campaigns always match the segment’s evaluated result set.

Step 4: Preview Results

  • As you apply conditions and groups, the system shows a participant count.

  • Counts update based on accurate evaluation of grouped AND/OR logic.

Exporting Segment Stats

You can also download a stat report for your segment. The report shows:

  • Segment Name

  • First Name

  • Last Name

  • Email Address

This gives you a clear record of which users are included in your segment at the time of download.

The Segments builder now supports true AND/OR logic, nested groups, and precedence-based evaluation, along with downloadable reports, making it possible to design highly accurate and flexible targeting rules.
